Enterprise AI strategy: scope, data readiness and governance

First, define what AI is expected to do

Before choosing an AI tool, I look at the scope. Where will AI be used, what will it be expected to do, and where should its role end? Once that is clear, we can assess whether the organisation has the right data and processes for that specific use. Having data somewhere in the business is not enough; it needs to be suitable for the work we expect AI to perform.

When the organisation needs preparation first

In one project I encountered, the company lacked documentation for its quality processes and procedures. Data held in different systems was also incomplete and inconsistent. Those issues were addressed before the AI work began. In that situation, my advice is to prepare the ground first. Clarifying the scope, resolving data quality problems and documenting processes are part of the move towards AI, rather than separate concerns to deal with later.

What an AI readiness assessment should examine

• A defined use case: what AI should do and the boundaries of its role.
• Data readiness: whether the required data exists and is suitable for the agreed scope.
• Data quality: missing records and inconsistencies between systems.
• Process readiness: documented procedures and a clear place for AI within the workflow.
• AI governance: who owns the data, reviews the output and makes the final decision.

• An agreed AI project scope and use-case priorities.

• An AI governance model with ownership and human review responsibilities.
