Why digital transformation is not just a technology project
Why successful transformation depends as much on governance, people, processes and institutional ownership as it does on technology.
Digital transformation often begins with the purchase of new software, the renewal of existing systems or the movement of processes online. These steps may be necessary, but they do not constitute transformation on their own.
Real transformation brings institutional objectives and technological capability together. If working practices, decision-making processes, responsibilities and measurement methods remain unchanged, the initiative usually amounts to digitisation rather than transformation.
A transformation programme should therefore begin not with a list of technologies, but with institutional questions: Which outcome do we want to change? How will success be measured? Who will own it? How will employee behaviour and organisational culture be affected?
I approach transformation as an integrated system of purpose, culture, people, processes, data and technology. The current state and genuine constraints are made visible first; the target architecture, priorities, quick wins and sustainable ownership model follow.
Technology is a powerful instrument of transformation. Institutional purpose sets its direction, people determine its pace and governance makes the change endure.
